Introduction to Cisco X2-10GB-LR and X2-10GB-LRM

Cisco 10GBASE X2 module offers a wide variety of 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity options for data center, enterprise wiring closet, and service provider transport applications. Today’s text will be focused on two commonly used Cisco 10GBASE X2 transceivers—Cisco X2-10GB-LR and X2-10GB-LRM.

Description of X2 Transceiver
Before we come to the main part of this text, let’s talk about the X2 transceiver first. X2 transceiver is a hot swappable products designed for 10Gbps fiber optic transceiver applications, which is the successor to the former XENPAK standards. Cisco X2-10GB-LR is single-mode 10GB transceiver working together 1310 nm, its max working distance is 10km. It is compliant with 10GBASE-LR standard. The X2-10GB-LR is a highly integrated, serial optical transponder module for high-speed, 10Gbps data transmission applications. It can achieve 4×3.125Gbps Ethernet signal input by XAUI (Auxiliary Unit Interface) interface. X2-10GB-LR is designed for 10km transmission using a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL). What Is Cisco X2-10GB-LRM?
Cisco X2-10GB-LRM module supports link lengths of 220m on standard Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) grade multimode fiber. It is compliant with 10GBASE-LRM standard. To ensure that specifications are met over FDDI-grade, OM1 and OM2 fibers, the transmitter should be coupled through a mode conditioning patch cord (MCP). What Is the Difference Between LH and LX Modules?
LH stands for Long Haul that means longer distances, while LX(long wavelength) denotes less energy which is obviously shorter distance. Before it was standardized, 1000BASE-LX10 was essentially already in widespread use by many vendors as a proprietary extension called either 1000BASE-LX/LH or 1000BASE-LH.

Difference Between Cisco SFP GLC-SX-MM and GLC-SX-MMD

Cisco’s leading position in data communication is undisputed. Cisco’s products, like switches, routers and Small Form-factor Pluggables(SFP) transceivers occupy most of the market share, of which Cisco SFP transceiver module plays a vital role in it. These small modular optical interface transceivers offer a convenient and cost effective solution for the adoption of Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel in data center, campus, metropolitan area access and ring networks, and storage area networks. Cisco SFP GLC-SX-MM and GLC-SX-MMD are the two common types of Cisco 1000BASE-SX SFPs. Today we are going to talk about the difference between Cisco GLC-SX-MM SFP and GLC-SX-MMD.

First let’s get familiar with GLC-SX-MM. GLC-SX-MM is Cisco 1000BASE-SX SFP transceiver module for multimode fiber. Cisco GLC-SX-MM is the SFP fiber optic transceiver module which operates on the 1000BASE-SX standard. It is the multimode module with a wavelength of 850nm. Cisco 1000BASE-SX SFP transceiver module supports hot-pluggable SFP footprint duplex LC connector Interface. This transceiver is built to comply with Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) standards. GLC-SX-MM supports dual data-rate of 1.25Gbps/1.0625Gbps, which is widely used in fiber channel links, Gigabit Ethernet links, Fast Ethernet links, other optical links. As it implies in the word, obviously the letter "D” is the only difference between GLC-SX-MMD and GLC-SX-MM. "D” refers to DOM functionality. DOM stands for Digital Optical Monitoring, which is an widely used standard, intended to give the network administrator the ability to monitor real-time parameters of the SFP, such as optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser bias current, and transceiver supply voltage.

That means you can configure your device to monitor optical transceivers in the system, either globally or by specified ports. When this feature is enabled, the system will monitor the temperature and signal power levels for the optical transceivers in the specified ports. Console messages and syslog messages are sent when optical operating conditions fall below or rise above the XFP or SFP manufacturer’s recommended thresholds. It is a useful function and now is very popular with users.

It is a great pity that GLC-SX-MM SFP has been no longer for sale since 2013 in Cisco. It is entirely replaced by GLC-SX-MMD. However, many users still choose to use GLC-SX-MM for the consideration of the costs and usage. Cisco GLC-SX-MMD is much more expensive than GLC-SX-MM. They nearly possess the same function in the switch except the additional DOM functionality.
